When Michael Devine called on Dave and Christine Wilson to discuss their medical insurance, he recommended they change to Sovereign's Medical and Specialist Plan which would meet their needs more comprehensively than the Southern Cross cover they already had. The couple agreed to the change because of Sovereign's policy to pay out 100% of claims - even though they would lose doctor and prescription benefits previously paid out by their Southern Cross policy. "We took the policy out with a $300 excess. The cost difference between the two companies was cents rather than dollars," Christine says. Just three months later, Dave started to get lower stomach pains and was diagnosed with colon cancer. The cancer had spread to the liver and he needed two major operations and radium treatment. Sovereign Insurance paid all costs of the operations and hospital treatment without question and also paid out Dave's life insurance when he was advised that the cancer was terminal. This allowed Dave and Christine to settle their mortgage and other bills, and gave Dave peace of mind that everything was in order for Christine when he passed away. Dave lost his battle with colon cancer in April 2002. Christine says the total cost of medical treatment for Dave during his illness was about $25,000 - all of which was paid by Sovereign. Only part of this would have been paid under the couple's previous Southern Cross policy, and Dave may not have had access to the high level of treatment he was given through Sovereign. "Sovereign didn't hesitate to pay out, even though we had only paid two monthly premiums. Michael Devine was a tremendous help - after Dave died, he stepped in to put things such as a death benefit in motion, and took over other financial aspects which lifted a huge burden for me," Christine says. |
